Self-esteem

I’ve been told to daily say:
I believe.
I believe.
I believe.

But what if I’m thinking:
I’m worthless, ugly,
bad, what
then?

What use is an empty belief system?
Where is this place of self-love?
How do I truly look at myself?
To see who I am
and smile
lovingly.

Yeah, adversity can shape and mould me,
but I wish for perseverance and dignity.
Something which will make me
unguarded with my heart,
less critically cynical,
hopelessly weary,
a carefree me,
open to
love.

For Pink Panther Magazine Many women suffer with low self-esteem and the impact can be felt for a long time.

How long has it been since anyone heard Offspring’s Self esteem? I love the humour of it and when I heard it today for the first time in years, brought to mind a poem idea, so here it is!!! (Lyrics to the song below)

I wrote her off for the tenth time today
And practiced all the things I would say
But she came over
I lost my nerve
I took her back and made her dessert

Now I know I’m being used
That’s okay man cause I like the abuse
I know she’s playing with me
That’s okay cause I got no self esteem

We make plans to go out at night
I wait till 2 then I turn out the light
All this rejection’s got me so low
If she keeps it up I just might tell her no

Chorus
When she’s saying that she wants only me
Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends
When she’s saying that I’m like a disease
Then I wonder how much more I can spend
Well I guess I should speak up for myself
But I really think it’s better this way
The more you suffer
The more it shows you really care
Right? yeah yeah yeah

Now I’ll relate this little bit
That happens more than I’d like to admit
Late at night she knocks on my door
Drunk again and looking to score

Now I know I should say no
But that’s kind of hard when she’s ready to go
I may be dumb
But I’m not a dweeb
I’m just a sucker with no self esteem

I’ll defer to Anna Quindlen, of The New York Times: “People who are knowledgeable about poetry sometimes discuss it in that knowing, rather hateful way in which oenophiles talk about wine: robust, delicate, muscular. This has nothing to do with how most of us experience it, the heart coming around the corner and unexpectedly running into the mind. Of all the words that have stuck to the ribs of my soul, poetry has been the most filling.”

I enjoyed your poem. I really like how it is structured. Not only is it pleasing to the mind but it’s pleasing to the eye also! Well done and thanks for sharing :)

  • What a moment of serendipity – while you were reading my musing on self-esteem, I was reading your journal entry. Personally, I think Fuck is the perfect accompaniment to this!!!! (But if you disagree, please Bmail me and I’ll delete the reply). Thanks for finding it visually appealing too – this is a kind comment :)

Your poem makes a lot of sense, and is really easy to relate to. We all have self-esteem issues at one point or another, and this brings many realizations to light.

  • Thanks for such a lovely and generous comment! I really appreciate it xoxo

Wow, yes, beautiful poem, and don’t we all (who don’t have it) long for that precious gift of self esteem and self love. The combination of the song lyrics made it all way intense. Live and learn, and hopefully grow into that precious warm and giving light, of love. Thank you for bringing me here. ♥
