Imperfect lyrics
Shoaib inspired much of this poem when I read lyrics for a generation to identify with
I guess the “who am I?” headspace is closely followed by circular thoughts of “who I am not”

Is it me you really seek?
Am I present, past or future?
Do these questions make me weak?
If a present, why do I feel
That you entrap me with conviction?
In a place where both love and hate
Are no more than a contradiction?
I do not wish to be rescued,
Nor held hostage on a mountain,
On a quest for truth and wisdom,
Self-immersion in a knowledge fountain.
If from the past, why do I walk
Alone, through my beautiful city?
Could I attempt a different path?
Choosing dignity over pity?
A reflection of history:
Not really wiser, only older,
(Agreed: true ignorance is bliss)
My awareness just makes me colder.
In my past I have secretly
Hidden from beauty and unity.
Youthful wounds concealed with contempt;
Now I fear your careful scrutiny.
Who cares if it’s said we are young?
Or a powerful voice of the future?
Everybody has their own wounds:
Kindness is needed to remove sutures.
Happiness and freedom are themes
For many songs, a million reasons,
But as my conformity grows,
I am withering with the seasons.
Anxious about past and future,
I cannot enjoy the present.
You say I must live, laugh and love:
Such carefree advice I resent.
Despite old pains, I’ve found freedom.
I can engage my rage, and scream,
Your empty platitudes numb me,
I search for my own kind of dream.
My recurring themes are knowledge,
Compassion and kindness above all,
Maybe not lyrics for everyone?
But they help me to stand strong and tall.
I must speak of imperfection:
Lyrics of loss and love gone wrong.
Without freedom in this union
My plaintive wail is not a love song.
