Written by school teacher, Mr Dirk Dullemond, in 1931, I am amazed at how it still connects with me, so much.
Such a clever, simple description, set to music, of the City of Gouda and of what it’s like to revisit – the city/town, where I was born.
How could he have known that, in 1931?
He organised annual weeks at the seaside for children, from Gouda who could benefit from a week at the seaside.
At least one year, my parents volunteered to be leaders and I needed to come along, as I was an only child.
This capture is of the scene where later that night, in December 2009, I would once again, witness: Gouda by Candlelight.
At night I wondered how warmly the children were dressed, as they sang the carols, conducted from that little stand.
Preparations were in full swing, when I arrived from The Hague to see all this again – as I’d done, 30 years earlier.
