Guinness, For Strength

The man standing
next to me at the bar
leans forward to speak.
I feel what he has to say
in breath against my cheek,
lips so close, brushing
skin ever so slightly,
a tactile language and a voice -

deep, sonorous, like a mysterious
Irish river – one from folklore
where Finn escapes his enemies
and saves his tribe from destruction.

I look down, blush,
because this man is not mine,
nor ever will be, he’s not gay,
not that that’s bad, but …
he’s taking me where no one
can and I want to go there.

A few choice words, lust,
scented by beer. Now, we go
our separate ways and through
a gap in his shirt, I see black hairs
on an alabaster chest, wonder
if they are soft and inviting –
a place to rest one’s head
and listen to a heart beat.
