I’ve waited agessss… finally the finance minster approved and I could go out and get myself a Canon 400D DSLR…
So I got the standard 18-55 lens, but I got them to throw in the 75-300 a 2gb card and a carry bag too…
So now I’m freaken waiting for the battery to charge…
So any tips any of you fellow 400d users might have, flood them in now and help me straighten up my learning curve…

nup.. my parent blessed me with 4 different names… they all spell mren; but Mr N works as well as my surname starts with N..
My first names Murray ..
I dunno if I’m gonna go on a posting frenzy, I guess like a lot of people here, I did that initially and now the standard on RB is so freaken high I have a ‘am I worthy’ moment everytime I go to click Upload…
SO I’ll take the selective approach, try and learn the ropes a bit first…thanks for your support rockstars..

Haha good guess then :) Hello Murray. Ich bin Ash :)
Know what you’re talking about with the upload hesitation. I’ve certainly felt that way since the start.
Keep it coming.

I purchased the same camera about 6 months ago and it dramatically improved my photography. One major suggestion – take your photos in RAW format. However, you’ll need software that will work w. RAW. I suggest purchasing (if you don’t already have it) Photoshop Elements (cheaper, paired down version) or betteryet CS (fuller, more powerful and has “curves” capability) (I have CS2 but the latest is CS3). The Canon 400D will only take the RAW images in the “manual” modes. The manual modes have varying levels of “manualness” if you will. I read the entire manual cover to cover and it definitely helped w. understanding the camera, even if I didn’t completely understand everything I was reading at the time. Also very helpful was checking out Canon’s on-line learning center for their DSLR camera users: http://www.photoworkshop.com/canon. They’ve really gone out of their way to help their consumers. Anyway, tons more I could say, but this should get you started. – Jenn

gang.
next purchase needs to be the EF 50mm 1.8
best $150 you’ll spend.
Lets go on an adventure when I’m in melb in a few weeks.

As said above, go pick yourself up a Canon 50mm f1.8 MkII, which can be had off eBay for about $110 delivered. It’s world sharper than the 18-55 and it will make you hate the 18-55 with a passion.
Remember, always shoot max quality in RAW (or if need be: JPG). There’s no point having a DSLR if your just going to turn things down (or off).
Learn to shoot in Av mode, it’s basically like Auto but you get to select your Aperture. And slowly move yourself into M (Manual) as soon as possible, you’ll get a much better understanding of your camera and how it all works.

thanks for the tips guys, I have started shooting in Av mode, occasionally in RAW to see how it comes out in Photoshop and the like. I’m still getting used to setting aperture and ISO and understanding DOF and all that, it’s a slow process with a lot of hit and miss, but I’m getting there..

Well done mate, explore the world with your 400D, you definitely made a good choice buying a Canon :D the 75-300mm will come in handy when you need to spy on animals (or people) but it’s supersharp and I love it! But take ur time…it took me a while to get used to my 350D (1 model below) but i did it with loads and loads of fun, so will you too! =D

You know what… With any camera which is an SLR read the manual, yes I know it’s dull then just go out and play. I have the 40d and I tell you the menu was seriously complex… anyway it is just a case of get out there and learn… Enjoy!

buzolic is a man who knows a sausage when he sees one. the 50mm 1.8 is one of the few economic miracles left on planet earth. price vs. quality there is nothing better, and if you’ve got a 350 or a 400 or something, i guess it’ll have a longer focal range- great for portrait work.
goes for nikon users too- who mustn’t forget that their camera’s can mount the weighty antique a-ring ‘f’ lenses from the days before autofocus- with precision cut glass elements which are juust, well, better.
there are hundreds of thousands of the canon eos lenses flying around the market (i believe they were sold as part of standard kit in japan with eos bodies for many years)- but don’t do e-bay; you’re a monkey if you buy a lens unless you can hold it uo to the light and check for mold. (spindly whitish whisps normally around the edge of the internal elements). cos if it’s been sitting around (and these lenses haven;t changed in design for 15, 20 years) it’s a big possibility.
personally i prefer drawing.
