Old patent slip at Evans Bay, Wellington New Zealand. by

If you visit Wellington New Zealand, you won’t see this scene anymore. It has long been replaced by fancy seafood restaurants and marinas. However, there used to be a slip at Evans Bay where boats were hauled up for general repair and maintenance. This is the subject of my pen and ink drawing – perhaps of historical significance nowadays – but the strong lines of the slip and the shadows cast by the old boat made a contrasty subject for my composition.

I remember this slip at Evens Bay! Believe it or not, I am in the process of scanning a stack of old B/W negs I forgot I had, they were all taken in 1965 when I was at art school there. If I can restore some (they’re in a woeful condition!) I will put them in my RB gallery. Your great sketches and my old negs are bringing back memories!

Many thanks for your comments. I too was at art school (in NZ at that time…Wellington Polytech School of Design 64-66 ! Is that the one that you attended ? Would be interested to see your B&W prints from that era if you can restore them. Pleased you liked the sketches.

Yes, I was there also, small world!!! I must have been a year or 2 ahead of you, I finished ’65 (I think).
Are you from Clifton on Darling Downs? I spent a weekend at the Pink hotel with a group of friends a couple of years ago… great little town.

Just worked out that I started the year after you which means you were in the same group as my brother Colin. I actually finished in 67.

Thanks for comments. Yes, Colin was in my class, I remember him. I often wonder what became of my art school colleagues. I guess you would have had James Coe as a tutor ? And yes, these days I reside near Clifton – it has three pubs, the pink one, and also the Irish pub very popular.
