The Power of the Dog

by
Rudyard Kipling

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie—
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

My Fo!rmative years were spent between two wartime airfields, so each night was spent sleeping in shelters, and school was always tense as dogfights were being fought overhead,
We made our own amusement in those days, and presents were second hand wooden toys if any could be found.
My teenage life found me on Motorbikes and fast cars.
,
My Later life was dogged by peaks and troughs of health problems.

Beautiful capture Malcolm full of such emotion. Wonderful clarity. I just wish everyone would treasure their animals.

  • Thank you very much Ginny, I cannot understand why folk treat their friends so badly, if you cannot look after them, then don’t have one.
