15% Off Calendars - That's 55 Free Days

It’s September! Which is pretty exciting by itself, and we’ve taken that excitement one step further by celebrating the recent launch of our marvellous 2010 RedBubble Calendars with a quite brilliant offer.

We’ve knocked 15% off all calendars, that’s 365 days for the price of 310. Where else can you find such value?

Nowhere that’s where.

And when you buy 10 or more, we’ll give you free shipping.

But you only have one week to enjoy this offer, (ends 10am AEST, convert to your time.) so if you haven’t already chosen 12 images and selected what will be brightening your kitchen next April, then I’d suggest you get your skates on and make yourself a fancy new calendar.

Of course if you’re really stretched for time, you can just buy somebody else’s.

And over here, someone called ‘Jo’, has written all about how useful they are as gifts or even at making you some money, with which to buy more calendars I expect.

And when they look this lovely, it’s just not surprising.

2009 is so last year.

Regards,

Mr Baxter – Deputy of Date and Time, But Mainly Date

Will I still get the 15% off on my price if I buy my own…and if someone else buys mine will I still get my same percentage or will I get less because of the sale?

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

You will get 15% off even if you buy your own.
You will get 15% less of your markup.

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

To clarify for people who are misreading this, yes if you don’t touch your markup you will get 15% off.
But for anyone who forgot, you have total control of you markup, so you can go and put it up. So the calendar may still be slightly cheaper but you actually make more, that part is up to you.

I don’t fancy taking a 15% hit on my mark-up just because RedBubble is feeling generous.

As the say, there’s no free lunch but in this case I didn’t even order lunch.

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

You control your margin, yes it gets cut by 15%, which should encourage more sales of course, but either way, you can go change your mark up to whatever you desire, you can earn more than usual and still have cheaper calendars to advertise.
    It’s really win win.

Could redBubble management provide some stats? I would find this very helpful as I am sure most would. How many calendars sold on RedBubble last year? Which groups sold the most? Did you do this 15% promotion last year? Did calendar sales to NON-members rise?

If I do not wish to buy my own calendar I will not be taking advantage of the 15% off.
If I sell a calendar to an outside customer, am I to understand my calendar profit is mandatorily 15% less (ie: $20 profit (ordinarily) would be reduced by 15% or $3.00 = $17.00 net profit)? You advised above we will get 15% less of our markup while this promotion is running. Some clarification would be most welcome … Cheers ~ Jayne Logan

Seems a bit early to me too. I would have thought later in October would be optimum for sales. September is very early to think about next year. Although I see some people say they have already bought.
Also, I am not ready. I was hoping to take advantage of the autumn light to get some calendar shots but looks like I’ll have to use other photos if I want to take advantage of the offer.
Having said all that (there’s no pleasing some people, I can hear you say!) I think it is a great idea and it will focus me into getting a calendar together.

  • Trudi's Images

    Trudi's Images

So do people that only purchased yesterday or just a few days ago when this was’nt an offer get a credit ? ............second time l have asked Mr Baxter

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

Hello, sorry I missed your first comment.
Unfortunately that’s a bit tricky, there’s alway a cut off. If we back date we still have to ‘stop’ somewhere, and the people just before that point will be miffed.
We’re always going to have sales across the products, and generally they just start, we’ve never backdated before, which means anyone who bought a shirt the day before our last tee sale will then feel they have a right.
It’s too tricky. So we just start and finish. Which does mean some people will just miss the boat, which is obviously unfortunate.

  • Darren Stones

    Darren Stones

I’m wondering why the artist’s name isn’t on the front of the calendar. Who designs this stuff?

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

Well you see you get to choose your title, so you can add your name. You can put whatever you want.
It gives more choice, lots of people have very odd and potentially personal usernames, and don’t want them on the front. Or perhaps they like being ‘catluva36’ on the site but want ‘Bill’ written on their calendars.
Now you’re not forced into it.

Calendars can still be used when the year is over if you recycle them with one of these (see below) Cut of the date part and you are set to hang them again, cut of the date part and the ring part and you can frame them.

Note take out the title page first because that is printed too low in relation to the other pages.

Warning: use of one of these weapons of mass finger destruction is at your own risk!!!

YAY!!!!! I am sooooo excited! Hopefully this will help me get some sales! I love when you guys do these special offers…..the only thing I would like to suggest is…could you give us advanced notification that you will be doing these sales? I have had family members and friends that all wanted to buy stuff, but once the sales come around, with only 1 week live, it’s always in between pay days. If we had advanced warning, we could let people nkow and they could save for their purchase….just a thought.

Mr Baxter (not sure that’s your real name), I reckon printing the calendar title and artist’s name would be the professional way to go. I won’t go into the whole public holiday situation, but the calendar is not really all that marketable to most segments of the commercial fraternity. It seems to me that RedBubble remains steadfast in aiming their products at the artist themself, Mum, Dad, Nana, Pop and Auntie Flo. Long way to go in making this a real attractive product for the masses, and having them available for sale through the bubblesite makes sense from my point of view.

To be honest, 15% is not enough discount. The artist’s name should be printed on the front cover. It’s plain and simple business sense to do so.

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

Of course it’s my real name.
The question is whether I exist in the first place or if i am legion. But I am off topic.

As for the calendars, I am very sorry that you feel 15% isn’t enough of a discount. If it’s bothering you too much I can have your calendars put back to full price and leave you to your usual business.

As for the name, as I said, you can have the title and your name. And if you want, just your name, or just a title. And thank you for your other suggestions, we do so love to here your thoughts. All will be considered.

  • Darren Stones

    Darren Stones

Just wish to add: my dear Mum just emailed and asked me to purchase two calendars for her. Go figure. :)

  • Darren Stones

    Darren Stones

Any chance of a 20-25% discount? I’m in a bartering mood today, Mr Baxter. ;)

I’m having a little fiddle – with the calendar titles that is. Suppose I can call my Mum’s calendar: XYZ007 by Darren Stones, so as to get the name in matching font.

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

    Perhaps:
“The Great Darren Stones Photographic Calender By Darren Stones”
Actually she probably knows what your name is anyway. Maybe just dedicate it, to me.
Go on then, I’ll make all your calendars free.1

    1. Oh hang on, no, that’s a total lie, you’re going to have to stick with the super generous 15% off like everyone else, sorry.

  • Darren Stones

    Darren Stones

Any chance you can personally sponsor and arrange 120,000 copies of one of my calendars before Melbourne Cup Day so I can give them away to each and every person who attends the cup? Or, is that stretching your weekly budget a tad?

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

Of course there’s a chance Darren.

I mean, it’s probably about the same as the chance of so much rain falling tonight that Melbourne’s reservoirs are full by the morning and we can all go and worry about something else.

    But there’s always a chance.

I’ll get back to you by yesterday.

this is great with the percent, but it is already right, unfortunately, one cannot arrange the calendars in groups, so that other they can see… so one can see a calendar only if, however, one on the respective artist goes… I do not want to grumble further, because I can make it not better:o)
if somebody liked to risk a look here my contribution is to it

Is it possible to make our Calendars visible within our Galleries as another means for people to find them when they have a favourite artist? Is is possible to add a calendar to a specific group like we do other art?

Here is mine for those interested.

The discount thing is confusing. I thought (as you would) that when RedBubble offers a discount, that discount is off RedBubble’s portion of the sale, but am I to understand that if a Bubbler buys their own, RB pays the discount, but if someone else buys it, the artist takes the hit? Since when does RB decide what artists get paid?? Does this apply every time RB advertises a sale? To be honest, I think that’s false advertising on RB’s part. RB is NOT giving a 15% site-wide discount on calendars, you are giving a 15% discount to artists who buy their own calendars, and imposing a 15% RB-wide markup deduction (ie pay cut) for the rest. Yes, artists can combat it by changing their markup but how many people will know that? We weren’t told that, and the only reason I even found out was because I checked this thread (now the week is nearly over) to see what the finishing date was again. How many people never saw this and will get a nasty surprise in their pay checks? I’d say most. I know several Bubblers who have added their own discount to RB’s discount to make their price more attractive, but this means that instead of a 15% hit, those artists will be taking a 25 or 30% hit instead if RB is passing the cost onto artists.
Next time RB is feeling generous a lot of confusion and annoyance could be avoided if you are just clear up front on who funds the generosity. I have no problem giving discounts from time to time – I just want to either decide myself when to do it, or at least know up front that it’s going to happen.

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

Hey Tara, very sorry for not getting back to you.

I think in general most people are aware they are in control of their margin. We advertise this to members, it’s in your ‘mybubble’ so yes, it’s for you to buy your own, but also for you to be able to market your wares, so you get to choose what discount you want the punters to have. We’re giving you the tools to empower yourself as sellers.

So we don’t cover the internet with ‘15% off calendars’ adverts because it isn’t true, you get to decide.

We’ve run a fair number of similar campaigns, and never had trouble before. Basically we can only control our base cost, we never get to control your margin, that power stays firmly with you.

  • Tara Lemana

    Tara Lemana

BTW, does the artist take the hit for the “free” shipping for ten or more calendars, too? I’m not sure what to read into any of RB’s other “sales” now. :(

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

Shipping has nothing to do with you.
The buyer pays to have their product shipped, this money goes to us shipping the product.
So no, when the shipping is free it just costs us money.

  • Tara Lemana

Another question, where are all the calendars? When one clicks on the calendars link on the RB home page, only 16 calendars show up. Where are all the rest? There must be hudreds, if not thousands – I myself have four, none of which show up. How does a random browser find calendars on RB??

Debbie, if they are the same as last year, then the answer is yes, at the bottom right of each page it says “artwork-name by artist-name”. And on the back of the calendar will be the URL of your RedBubble profile.

Well I have just sold my first calender ever!! I am thrilled as the images were specifically chosen for the person buying it. I am not complaining here but the Exchange Rate just does not tally up! Can you please exlpain! would have been nice to have commission without the 15% though :(

Still here is my first calender sale

and hopefullly they are as brilliant as you say :))

RB Calendars are pretty good value at the best of times and with this little promo I actually sold a few this year (not just to myself this time lol). Thanks for a great offer.
I think calendars would do so much better if we could submit them to groups or have a specific place to show them off (after all they’re a great way to present your work and also buy from your fav artists)- any thoughts on that ?

Pamela, if your cut is less than you expect, don’t forget, 15% of the TOTAL price is taken off only YOUR portion – which makes it a lot MORE than 15%, depending on your markup. For example, if you have a 100% markup, making your calendars around US$40 (rounded up slightly to give nice round numbers), your cut is $20. 15% of $40 is $6. $20-$6=$14 which makes the discount you’ve ACTUALLY given closer to 30% discount.
I’m really NOT impressed with how this has been handled, so far RB has chosen not to answer any of my questions nor anyone else’s who has questioned the false advertising they did in this case or the questionable way RB’s chosen to structure its “discounts” (read: pay cut). I for one would like to see a response from RB about the issues I raised earlier in this thread, as well as why they’re calling a pay cut of 30% or even higher (the lower your markup the bigger the ) a 15 sales discount!

  • Mr Baxter works here  replied

It will always be a 15% cut, it’s just the original price may be different, depending on your mark up.
But we take 15% off the base cost. So therefor your 20% margin is 15% lower (but it’s still a 20% margin) so the total cost is still 15% lower.

I do apologise for not getting back to you before.

Is it possible to change a price for the calenders or for the pictures? I didn’t found an option to do it.

  • prbimages

    prbimages

Tara: _… don’t forget, 15% of the TOTAL price is taken off only YOUR portion – which makes it a lot MORE than 15% ...

Tara, I think you are misunderstanding how this works. The base price of the calendars has been reduced by 15% for the sale period. Your markup percentage remains the same. So if the base price is $20, and if your markup is 100%, then normally your calendar would cost $40 and you would make $20 profit. During the sale period, the base price has been reduced to $17. If your markup remains at 100% then your calendar will cost $34 and you would make a profit of $17. So yes, your profit is reduced by 15%, but not by 30% as you claim above. Hope this helps,

    Cheers, prbimages :-)

Thanks prbimages but that does not compute with what Mr Baxter says above. He said that if someone else buys your calendar, the 15% comes out of your markup, not out of the base price?!

    I quit!
RB is not consistantly showing my work I’ve uploaded when I tried making my last calendar.

I can’t imagine why on earth names of photos would show up on, say March, and not January. It’s driving me bonkers! Also, not being able to see thumbnails as I try to make the calendar is very frustrating.
What’s up with all this RB?? Is it jut me or is anyone else having probs?
