nalanda is one of the sites of the modern buddhist pilgrimage in northern india. it is situated in the state of bihar.
from about the 5th century CE, nalanda was an ancient center of higher learning of the buddhist and hindu world (which were then not considered as separate) until its destruction by muhammad bakhtiyar khilji and his army in 1193.
i had the unique chance of doing part of the buddhist pilgrimage together with my tibetan friend chosang and his two little boys, three tibetan SOS children’s village home mothers and a young student of chosang’s. at the time of our visit, there was a strike of public transport in the state of bihar. chosang managed to organize private transportation for our group and we were, apart from one other little group of asian pilgrims who somehow made it too, the only visitors on that day.
