Artist's Description

what a lovely bunch of kids! this man can be proud indeed. all girls too, which is a very unusual picture in india. too often, women would get an abortion if they expect a second girl. the exorbitant sums they have to spend on their daughter’s dowry, demanded by the future husband’s family, often leaves the bride’s family at the verge of financial collapse. not many couples can afford to marry off more than one daughter. an abortion seems to be the quick and easy way out of this.

luckily, this custom has not yet arrived at the indigenous population of south india. although, more and more, the members of these tribal communities become believers of a ‘mainstream’ hinduism and therefore adapt to the customs of the majority.

nagarhole jenukuruba community, karnataka, india, 1999
