the baby had been born a week before. it was shy and hid behind her mother. she noticed that i wanted to see it and nudged her babe gently with her trunk into view of my lens. incredible this moment of understanding between mothers –
i was pregnant with my own babe then.

A very interesting shot, but a sad shot nonetheless. The quality of the shot is really good, but the idea of chaining the mother is very disturbing.
it’s true what you’re saying joseph. it made me sad too. these elefants have been working for the forest department for many many decades. they are born in captivity and will die in captivity. as long as we are buying teak furniture and other precious wood items, we are supporting this too. on the other hand, many tribal families depend on the income of their keeper as mahout, so there is always that to it too.

A beautiful baby and congratulations on your own baby. Those chains are so upsetting. it’s a wonder she wasn’t angry instead of being so understanding. We humans are not a very nice species I’m afraid :( .. great shot mate :))
yes i know. and she has a sort of sad expression too. but i wonder why they never take leave. these chains are surely not as stong as the elephants and their wild cousins live only a trunk tumpet blow away.
