Orange Sulphur Butterfly - Colias eurytheme by

These pretty butterflies are especially fond of sunny, open fields and meadows. They love mud puddling – the gathering of butterflies at a puddle’s edge or in mud where they can drink.

The coloration on these beauties can vary.

The caterpillars feed mainly at night and prefer the clovers and alfalfa. The butterflies are nectar feeders and will visit a wide variety of flowers, but you will almost always find them on milkweed, asters, and goldenrod.

They range from Southern Canada to central Mexico, coast to coast in the United States except for the Florida peninsula. They are one of the most common butterflies in North America.

This picture was taken in East Greenville, Pennsylvania, USA, on September 7, 2012.

I love nature, science, poetry, prose, art, music – you name it! Now that I’m retired, time is mine to spend as I wish (pretty much), and I wish to take pictures of our natural world.

Bringing the outdoors in for others to see, especially those who may not get the opportunity to wander next to a pond, fish at the beach, or tramp in the woods, is a pleasure. I hope to build a window to the wonders of nature that fill our everyday lives.

I love these butterflies, but they do flutter around so fast, it’s not always easy to capture their picture. This is beautiful!

  • Thanks. They are moving, moving, moving, as you said:>) The cabbages are also harder to capture than one would think. I think of the chase as exercise!

I love this close up , how on earth do you get butterflys to stay still long enought for a wonderful capture like this… I love that you name your photos, its great to learn what we see…

  • I try to find identifications but am not always successful – mushrooms are especially frustrating! I truly appreciate the visit and the fave:>)
