Velvet Foot Mushroom - Flammulina velutipes by

This kind of mushroom fruits in cold weather, and these were growing on logs in our wood pile late in December. I took the picture in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA, on December 28, 2011, and it was COLD!

They are said to be delicious and are known by other names like enoki. I always caution folks NOT to eat wild mushrooms, however, unless they are expert in mushroom identification or have an expert at hand.

CAUTION AND WARNING: There is a deadly mushroom that fruits at the same time and likes the same habitat; it is called Galerina autumnalis and will cause death if eaten. Here is a web site about this poisonous mushroom:

I love nature, science, poetry, prose, art, music – you name it! Now that I’m retired, time is mine to spend as I wish (pretty much), and I wish to take pictures of our natural world.

Bringing the outdoors in for others to see, especially those who may not get the opportunity to wander next to a pond, fish at the beach, or tramp in the woods, is a pleasure. I hope to build a window to the wonders of nature that fill our everyday lives.

Great shot. They look different to the Enoki we get in the shops which are usually white.
