These baby groundhogs are already eating their way toward the plants we don’t want them to eat. Time to get out the liquid, environmentally safe, very effective spray (don’t want to use the name). Groundhogs (Marmota monax) are found almost everywhere in the USA, including Alaska, and belong to the squirrel family – BIG squirrels. They do climb trees; we’ve watched them.

Here in Pennsylvania we have Punxsutawney Phil who determines on Groundhog Day if we get six more weeks of winter. He’s a likable sort of groundhog, sometimes going by the name of Woodchuck, Whistle Pig, or Grundsow.

This trio of youngsters is ready to be on their own – waiting for Mom to kick them out forcefully, I guess. They will set up territories of their own and live up to six years in the wild. they mainly eat plants and nuts, but will snack on snails and bugs.

I took this picture today (May 15, 2012) in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA.

I love nature, science, poetry, prose, art, music – you name it! Now that I’m retired, time is mine to spend as I wish (pretty much), and I wish to take pictures of our natural world.

Bringing the outdoors in for others to see, especially those who may not get the opportunity to wander next to a pond, fish at the beach, or tramp in the woods, is a pleasure. I hope to build a window to the wonders of nature that fill our everyday lives.

You can say that again. They are so cut. Great Shot and a fave.

  • They are so much fun to watch, even when they’re grown, but they think flower gardens are their personal buffet tables! I did discover a totally safe spray that discourages them and the deer so that we do have flowers again:>) Thank you for commenting and giving this image the ’ol FAVE:>)
