This youngster was pouting. A large male grabbed his meal from him and chased him away. When adult, these gulls are the largest gulls in the world, very loud, and learn quickly that fishermen have bait that makes a delicious meal, especially when stolen.
The Black-Backed Gull is bright white with black wings and tail. They are mostly residents of the North Atlantic coastal areas, but their range is expanding and they can be found as far inland as the Great Lakes. These gulls are common and not endangered.
