Artist's Description

This is a small, spotted skate ( about 12 to 20 inches in length)) that likes sandy or gravelled sea floors. It feeds mainly on the bottom although it will swim up to the surface to capture small bait fish. This skate ranges from the shallows to 1,00 feet in depth.

Skates are related to stingrays but lack the sharp, venomous barb at the base of their tail. They lay eggs while stingrays bear live young.

This picture was taken on Island Beach State Park, Seaside Park, NJ, on May 17, 2009, with an Olympus FE 240 set on macro.

Dedicated to the “catch and release” philosophy.
