Artist's Description

This little guy (gal?) was taking a mid-morning sunbath on a lily pad. Painted turtles are the most common turtle in North America. It lives in in ponds and lakes, and may sometimes be found in slow moving streams. They’ve been around for 15 million years, and they can live up to the age of 55 and sometimes longer. There are four sub-species and their ranges do overlap. Although they are the most common turtle in North America, their habitat is threatened in some areas. The females leave their safe water homes to lay eggs in nests dug into the dirt. Road kills happen when the Moms are seeking a suitable nesting area and when the babies migrate back to the water.
