Artist's Description

I saw this beauty on Ironweed (Vernonia gigantea) at the Green Lane Nature Center, Montgomery County, PA. The larvae feed on an introduced species called Tree-of-Heaven which was imported from China. Adult moths visit flowers during the day and are pollinators. the caterpillars don’t do much damage, and they aren’t considered serious pests. Although the moths migrate north, they can’t survive really cold weather.
