Artist's Description

The Eastern American Toad is one of the most recognized amphibians in America. In our area, vernal pools are a favorite place for egg-laying. Eggs hatch in 3 to 30 days, and metamorphosis is completed in 30 to 40 days. Tadpoles have toxic compounds in their skin which helps protect them from predators. Adult toads can grow to 3.5 inches with females larger than the males. They eat insects, spiders, worms, and even slugs – welcome them into your garden! During daylight hours toads usually hide under boards, stones, or other objects where it is cool and damp. In winter they hibernate by digging backward into soft dirt. They are gentle (but may urinate on you if you pick one up) and make easy pets.

This photo was taken September 5, 2010, in Green Lane, Pa. I lifted a board and there it was, web-faced.
