Great Spangled Fritillary Butterfly - Speyeria cybele by

These beautiful butterflies have silver, shining spots on their underwings. This one is enjoying a sip of milkweed nectar.

For a more detailed write up on the fritillaries, visit here:

The photograph was taken May 22, 2013, in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA. We grow a garden of milkweed just for the butterflies, but we also get many other beautiful insects, spiders, beetles, etc.

Taken with a Canon T4i and Tamron Sp 90 mm F/2.8 1:1 Macro lens, hand held and done by an amateur (brand new to DSLR as of April 2013).

I love nature, science, poetry, prose, art, music – you name it! Now that I’m retired, time is mine to spend as I wish (pretty much), and I wish to take pictures of our natural world.

Bringing the outdoors in for others to see, especially those who may not get the opportunity to wander next to a pond, fish at the beach, or tramp in the woods, is a pleasure. I hope to build a window to the wonders of nature that fill our everyday lives.

Such a beautiful creature perched on your flowers! You are SO good to grow milkweed, as it helps so many insects. And of course you get the great benefit of seeing all the wonderful creatures that love milkweed – a real win/win scenario.

  • Milkweed is a wondrous plant – a micro-environment for so many creatures and it is beautiful to boot:>) If people think their land is too wet – try Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) which is a wetland plant. We get milkweed Tussock moths, a fuzzy black, orange, and white caterpillar that is colonial – they are fun, too:>). Thank you for your insightful comment, Celeste, and for the fave, too:>)

Great capture Carol…I didn’t know this about milkweed. It is lovely but I’ve been pulling them from my garden…will let them bloom now.

  • There is a milkweed called Butterfly Weed ( http://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_... ) that butterflies LOVE! It’s orange-ish. They do love the pink and purples of other milkweeds, though, and there is even a wildflower kind called Swamp Milkweed that grows where it’s feet stay wet:>). Something for every gardener or butterfly enthusiast:>) Thank you for the nice comment, Sandra – loved having you visit:>)

    Just a fabulous image.
The Milkweed is a good idea.
    I may try that myself.

  • Thanks, John, and a huge thanks for making it a favorite! Milkweed is a magnificent plant for creating a microenvironment. My only caution is they draw aphids (what doesn’t????) – we let nature do it’s “thing”, but some folks may not like that:>)
