Artist's Description

This pretty little insect looks very much like a dragonfly but is smaller, more delicate, and there are some differences. They come in all colors of the rainbow – lovely creatures – and are quite variable by color, so I have the very devil of a time trying to ID them. We’ll call this one a Golden Damselfly for lack of a good identification.

The females lay their eggs in water or in aquatic plants. When the larvae hatch they live on the bottom of ponds, streams, and such and eat mosquito larvae and other small things. When they go through the final shed and emerge as adults, they feed on flies, mosquitoes, and such, and we should be happy to see them in our yard! They do not chase people and don’t bite unless handled roughly; even then the bite wouldn’t do much harm.

This dragonfly was found in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA, in late August. 2011.
