Shadows,Industrial Storage Tank by Joe Mortelliti

Shadows,Industrial Storage Tank by

This image caused me to get a visit from the police at 11.00am at night.
I had photographed it toward sunset and headed home, seems the day before a tourist attack had occured at an oil refinery in England and everyone here in Oz was on alert.
Security had taken down my car number and the hence visit.
From there the story hit the papers with this picture, and then the TV, as other photographers also got home visits from police.
In the end after much press, comments froml local politians ,counter terrosim authorities, cheif of polic etc, the acting Premier of Victoria announced on TV that it was not against the law to take pictures of industrail installations from a public place.

Love the shadow play so much Joe!!! Would be interesting to get, say, hourly shots for a day!! Although, would that mean more visits from the police? :P Interesting story behind the photo mate :) I hope the police liked the shot as much as we :)

Great image Joe, I had a similar experience photographing the exact same subject, except in South Australia. If you are interested have a look, I have one image that is identical to this (except in reverse ) and others are in B/W with interesting shadows. At least now I know that it is not against the law, but I don’t blame them for being careful.

  • Thanks Wayne, had a look and added you to my watch list.
Can understand people feeling jumpy, however mass amounts of sensitive material is available in the public domain without risk to any genuine terrorist, so our creative images taken from the road are in no way sensitive…simply a case of unprofessional security guards and people wanting to be seen as protectecting the public.

This is lovely to look at. Almost an illusion that the curving stairs are not attached and floating round the tower. Against the vivid blue sky. Your work is quite inspiring.

  • Great to read you feel inspired by looking at these images…I also learnt so much through doing the same with other photographers over the years
