This is the Philosophical Egg of the alchemists, the container of the soul. Inside there is a boy and a girl. The boy, who is actually Indian god Ganesha, is holding fire and the girl gently leans on his shoulder and pours water out of her hand. They are the animus and anima, the Jungian terms used to describe the male and female parts of the soul. The egg belongs to the womb – which is the giant lotus the egg rests upon, getting nourishment from the water below and the Sun above. Thus we have everything needed to sustain life – the sunlight, the water and earth, the air, and the unity of water and fire, the Above and Below.
