The dunes just outside Stovepipe Wells on the Mesquite Flats in Death Valley National Park. This shot was taken around 6am, trying to make the most of high-contrast early-morning light. In the event, a haze close to the horizon kept the scene from being heavily contrasty. With the vertical crop I really wanted to emphasize the clouds- at first they dissapointed me, but when I saw how they stood out with the polarizer, I found they made an integral part of the composition, and are a nice textural counterpart to the sand and the ripples. The splashes of sunlight on the face of the big dune really brought out the shape and form of the sand too.
