This little girl was one of a small group of children we met living in one of our housing projects for families who had lost their homes in a hurricane a couple of years earlier. Isle de la Gonave is a small island off the Haitian mainland, about 25 minutes’ flight from Port-au-Prince, and to this day remains one of the most idyllic little places I’ve visited- intense poverty notwithstanding. I am usually on these trips assessing projects, but in this case I left that work to other colleagues and was able to indulge myself in a little photography. The kids were just beautiful, and the walls were all really bright hues of blue and pink and green, and made for fabulous backdrops for portraits. I’m not sure that this little lady ever really warmed to the camera lens, but the expression she gave me in this split second was priceless- still one of my favourite portraits that I’ve taken.
