Caught unprepared
A fun look at mild winter weather, and the care required of a vehicle in “cold” temperatures… though it is actually referring to a bicycle :)

It is with some embarrassment that I have to admit to being unprepared for the first vicious winter weather this year. You’d think I would have expected to actually see frost in December, especially considering that the temperature had plunged all the way down to only +2C on more than one occasion.
But the vehicle I use for delivering the mail had no antifreeze. None. I hadn’t even checked it. When it was time to leave home I was in a rush, so I had to risk taking it out in that first freezing morning, hoping that it would be okay.
I keep my vehicle inside overnight, which is very fortunate because I don’t even own a window scraper. When I wheeled it out onto the sidewalk I noticed that all the other vehicles were completely covered with those terribly cold little ice crystals. There was a concern that my kick-stand would freeze before I got bundled up in my winter hoodie.
With frost on the road as well, there was a serious danger of slipping because I don’t have studded tires. I still had my summer tires on! The fact that no one else here switches to winter tires doesn’t matter. I should know better. I’ve never yet seen tire chains in the stores, so I didn’t have them either. My only option was to stay below the speed limit.
I’m lucky that I do my mail delivery in the morning because the forecast warned of the weather turning REALLY bad in the afternoon when there was a chance of snowflakes! By the time that happened, my vehicle was safely back inside.

Very humorous and you know Dutchies live already ages with this crazy weather and almost all of them bike! Tought people right?

I didn’t mention that much of what I implied about “Dutchies” could also be said about Vancouver people. Since the climate is very similar to here, they don’t know how to deal with winter… and most of them don’t have much of a concept of how big the province is. Silly city people, eh?

What a hoot! You almost had me there, but I sure hope your not in a wreck with your vehicle. You could be seriously hurt. lol

I have NO plans to become involved in any kind of wreck… I’m too old for that kind of thing. I stay waaaaaaaaaay under the speed limit with my “vehicle” :)
