Silhouette Pioneer Barn

Silhouette Pioneer Barn

The day previous to this shot I was at the same location but a few minutes earlier. There were more cattle on the horizon and I was able to get some shots with the sun peeking through the gaps in the logs. However, when shots are lost, there’s not much to do but carry on, right? Luckily the photography Gods were nice about giving me some good sunset colours for the second shooting.
The barn dates back to the 1930s, designed for storing loose hay because balers were still many years away. The overhang at the peak of the roof is for the pulley system to run along a rail to carry hay inside. Horses were used to pull the ropes that lifted and transported the hay. This barn was probably about two logs taller than what you see now, since the bottom logs have rotted into the ground. The ends of the logs show the axe marks that cut them down… no chainsaws back then. I couldn’t quite read the label, but I’m guessing this barn is past its “best before” date :)

Thank you Angie. When I read your note about the new challenge I went into my posted work to enter this one into the challenge. I discovered that I had never posted it on RB :( So, now it’s up and I’ve entered it :)

Wow, superb atmospheric shot with exceptional sky colours and tones

  • MooseMan replied

Thank you Steve. This is among my all-time personal favorites, and you identified the reasons… the fact that it is a barn I’ve seen a million times driving by it near my home farm adds a sentimental aspect.

Beautiful sunset, fantastic silhouettes. I enjoyed the story and info on the photo itself, also liked the touch of humor at the end!

Thank you my favorite Dolphin lady… I really like the fact that you take time to read the text. I like to provide information; I think it can add to the feeling of, and connection to, the picture. I’m glad to hear it is appreciated :)

Hi Ted, gorgeous photograph, beautiful silhouettes, love how that sunset is showing thru the old logs too. The old rough sawed oak? barns will stand for many years even after they look like this one. I remember the day of putting up the loose hay, but it was not in the 30ies! lol. Beautiful colors in that sunset.

Hi Carolyn, it was nice of you to put those first three words together like that, but it’s a bit toooooooooo flattering! :) There’s no oak trees where I grew up. Maybe winters are too cold, maybe squirrels are too big… I don’t know (can you tell? :) These logs are almost certainly pine. The pine that is so common at home is known as “lodgepole pine” because they grow so tall and straight. I have no memories of dealing with loose hay; are you sure you are the same age as me? :)

lol i was sure it was not oak, just used what is familiar to me here…......old as you, who said anything about being old as you? lol I do believe Deb’s comment above was intended for me, but i will let you keep it since its your photo, i will just have to give her a hug for calling you a girl ha! ha! You know i not passing up an opportunity to give ya smack!!! ,;O)

  • MooseMan replied

HEY!! NO GANGIN’ UP!! The socially appropriate thing for you to do when you find something like that “girl” thing, is to silently let it go by, NOT jump on it, NOT hold it up for everyone to see!! :( [Don’t think for an instant that this will be forgotten any time soon…] :) :)

My heavens, Ted … this is a showpiece for sure. Glorious. This is one of those shots that will be a classic forever. Not sure you realize what you’ve captured here. And by the way, you could drive by here and shoot every evening and we’d never get tired of what you find!!! Loved your note at the end re the “best before” date!! Toooooo fun!!! Pop this baby into a few more groups, please. Let’s get some Features under its belt!!!!

  • MooseMan replied

Wow! Thank you tons for your enthusiastic thoughts! If this is “a classic forever” as you say, then you are right that I have “not realized what I’ve captured here”. I’m in a couple of groups where this photo qualifies; maybe I need to look at the groups you are in to find a couple more :) Ted

I love silhouettes and this is no excpetion…so beauitfully captured Ted, and the silhouttes here are so crisp…it’s getting harder to find these old buildings..someday we are going to be stuck with alluminum barns, lol.

  • MooseMan replied

You are soooooooo right about these old pioneer buildings disappearing :( I’m a fan of silhouettes, too, which is part of the reason that his shot is one of my personal all-time favorites. Thanks tons for the note :) Ted
