Apologies….for the cynical view
If love could be returned ounce for ounce, pound for pound
Between two protagonists, then all the problems
Of unrequited love, and lovers getting depressed,
or hating each other will go away.
Everything will be fair, and there is no need for break-ups, or pain, or separation.
It will be perfect.
But love is not like that, in most cases anyway.
There is a draw of luck, where one gets the short end of the straw, the other long.
So we see love between two becoming a war.
A war where there are no victors, only losers.
In the aftermath of war, the one who loves more is left licking the wound,
sad about old memories,
The one who goes away leaves with a hardened heart, numb feelings and wasted time.
There are no victors, only losers with tears, regrets, fear, and a loveless heart.
Is love fair?
