Locals call it a House of Ghosts. It was built in 1876 and changed couple of owners. The last one was from 1913, Romanian jewish family, who owned it until 2nd World War. After Nacis confiscated what was worth of taking from the inside this charming building was abandoned by everyone.

Now it is too late for any kind of renovation. It is totally ruined and it should be pulled down. Only walls left – and rubbish. People use it for a rubbish dump. It is not safe going inside cause everything is falling apart.

I was fascinated with it. It must have been a gorgeous house once. Unfortunately, this is a story of too many old buildings in Slovenia which end like this one. Abandoned.

Great shot. Sad to see such a marvellous house derelict though: it makes me think of an old lady still showing hints of the beautiful girl she once was…
It’s always great to know the story behind the image too as it brings the image to life and gives it a place in history, so thanks for the information.

  • Mojca Savicki replied

    Thank you PommieGranite.
Yes, it’s sad, but unfortunately a reality in Slovenia. Glad you like it :)

looks like it would be a great place for those new “Ghost Hunters” on TV to set up for the night. sad to see such a beautiful place go to dust. great shot.

  • Mojca Savicki replied

Ha ha J.K., i was in and didn’t sense any ghost. It’s possible that people hear noises as everything is falling apart, it’s actually dangerous, you can get something on your head if you’re not careful :)

I’m soooo happy to find this. Great picture.
When I was a little girl, I’ve been in Dobrna several times and I remember this house like it was yesterday. Then, it was couple of families with bunch of children living in this house. Been so sad I haven’t any picture of it.
Thank you, you really make my day. Now I’m sure I’m going to visit Dobrna soon as I can.

Great composition. It is such a shame that humanity (actually I really mean governments) create conditions that let socieities fall apart. We never really learn from history do we…seems it’s all happening again.

  • Mojca Savicki replied

You should see how many buildings like this one is falling apart here only because ownership is not settled.

and then when the place falls into such a state they wont own up to ownership!

A gorgeous house and a sorrow it is left to crumble – nature will reclaim it Nature doesn’t care!
your story is a treatise and this picture illustrates it creating an Ekphrasis
I would love to receive this and other work like this into the EEG
    Thank you! ♥
