Location fashion shoot at Darling Harbour, Sydney – part of the workshop on outdoor night location shooting I did recently with Koukei.

The idea was to get the model frozen mid-twirl against the ambient city lights. However I found the background I chose didn’t work too well – just looked too busy and distracting. I used a high ISO to get a slow shutter speed and maximum depth of field but in retrospect it would have been better to use a shallower depth of field to get a better bokkeh effect I think. So I converted the background to a zoom blur. What do you think?

You’re right – the original background is distracting. I think your post processing is great and the blur works nicely. Great shot Geoff.

  • Thanks muchly for the feedback Marguerite – glad you like it.

Either way Geoff, this is stunning – her face is well in focus and absolutely mesmerizing – the flow of the dress is stop action magic. And yes, the zoom background is more effective – TMI in the other…..thank you for keeping us abreast of your doings and the progress. Koukei ought to be impresed!

  • Thanks for your really considered feedback Julian – very much appreciated.

What do I think? I think you are far too clever for me… Love the multiple levels of motion goin on in this one Geoff.

  • Oh I suspect not – I’d never be clever enough to pull a stunt like your blind opera singer effort on myself :-) Thanks for your lovely comment Ms Muffin.

  • Thanks sweetie – that’s the look I was going for (as well as trying to turn a problem to an advantage).

Nice image Geoff! I always like images with blur and flash to stop motion, you just never know exactly what you will end up with.

  • Yes it is a bit of a lottery but very satisfying when it works. Thanks Tim.
