This is my first attempt at a beauty portrait and was shot recently at Darling Harbour in a location-shooting workshop run by Peter (koukei)
The workshop was mainly about using flash at night on location for beauty and fashion shots but Peter also pointed out that ambient lighting on location can also give a great light source.
The light source for this shot is a standard tungsten bulb in a stairwell at Darling Harbour. I really liked the quality of the light coming from it but it was incredibly low. I had to shoot this at ISO 1000 and 1/30 second to get a decent exposure. A more unforgiving camera setting for a portrait like this would be hard to imagine but the other really useful thing I learned from the workshop is how much value a skilled professional makeup artist adds to a shot like this. Natasha was our model for the night but she is mainly a MUA of exceptional skill.
