There is an old legend that a Persian prince loved a maiden so much, and when she was killed, rode his horse over a cliff, and that scarlet tulips sprang up from each droplet of his blood…giving the red tulip the meaning of “perfect love.” Seven has a meaning of perfection or completion and fullness; four and three makes seven, auspicious numbers. Seven graces, seven deadly sins, seven ages of life, seven seas, seven heavens, the seventh son of the seventh son. We use seven days as a means of counting days and time, seven times seven is jubilee. And there is the seven year itch, which has nothing to do with what you might or might not think it is…it is itchy and so hard to scratch, draw your own conclusion. There is a metaphor in tulips and the number seven and “perfect love” and a maiden whose prince could not go on without her…lost love…the tulip rises and the maiden watches over all the tulips blooming every season of the tulip, year after year.
Just a note certain tulip bulbs are eatable as well as the tulip petal…bon appetite.
