White Cow Elk, Montana Elk Photo by

One of our neighbors told us the game farm on the Fairfield Bench had some white elk. We had to go see for ourselves if this was true. As you can see from the photo, the elk do exist. I had never seen this species before, so capturing an image of this cow elk, was a thrill.

I was inspired by her alert ways, she was the “watch dog” for the herd, and she was doing a good job! I also loved the coloring, or lack of it, on this elk.

Photo taken with a Nikon D300, 70-300 Tamron lens, near Fairfield, Montana.

Enjoying what Montana has to offer, greatly influences my work. Rodeos, horses, mountains, all of this plays a part in what I create. I lived here in Montana, taking care of cattle and horses on the ranch until I retired a few years ago.

I now spend my time recreating in Montana, and creating photos and paintings from what I see here in this state.

I never knew that white elk existed, but this is not, I repeat not an albino. It has brown eges and dark nose.

  • I know they are not albino, albino’s have pink eyes and noses. This is a white elk as I stated in the description.
