Our Separate Ways by Donna Ridgway

There was a ranch near Dupuyer, Montana, that raised buffalo. We drove by one day and saw the buffalo laying in the field. As we watched, they began to get up to go their separate ways and find something to eat.

These bulls were laying close to each other, facing different directions, as they got up, I waited with my camera to get this shot!

Enjoying what Montana has to offer, greatly influences my work. Rodeos, horses, mountains, all of this plays a part in what I create. I lived here in Montana, taking care of cattle and horses on the ranch until I retired a few years ago.

I now spend my time recreating in Montana, and creating photos and paintings from what I see here in this state.

they are magnificent and majestic beauties !!
outstanding work Donna, this is beautiful !!

  • Thank you Karon! They really are magnificent, I love seeing them! You have the Bison Range there, is it in spring or fall, when the bulls fight for mates, I want to go there then, but have to figure out when it is! I think it’s spring, I rode my horse on the Bison Range Ride one year and saw bulls fighting near the trail. That was in May I think…

yes, i go to the Bison Range frequently, the breeding season is right after the calving season in spring, late May and June. i was there on the 11th and there was a lot of activity, it was so great to be there. How fun to ride your horse there !!

  • They have that ride every spring, so many riders! When you get to the top, they feed you…then you come down again. I’ll remember the dates for the breeding season, maybe next year we’ll go there!

wow, you know in all these years, i’ve seen riders on horses, even saw some in June, but i didn’t know it was an annual event, how cool

  • In fall, you can watch them do the round up, and work the buffalo through the chutes, that’s fun too! You could get some great shots of the riders bringing the bison down the hill and pushing them into the corrals. I’ve been there, but never had a good camera then!
