"Just Seeing" dispels dark clouds! (please see description) by

The teaching

“’When you see, just see. When you hear just hear. When you think, just think; and when you know, just know’ – Buddha

Stripped of its conventional meaning a blip of colour is not an abstraction. On the contrary, the concepts we impose after seeing it are the abstractions, having no reality in the absolute sense. Erase the descriptions and you are left with ultimate truth: a momentary, impersonal image (rupa) that doesn’t pertain to any named thing beyond itself; and the mind (nama), which is there to know the sensation…

Just Seeing means to catch the instant when color contacts the retina, before memory tags it as white or green, or a sail or a leaf. The mind leaves the experience as is without identifying, interpreting or imposing any bias. This accords with the Buddha’s words, “On seeing, let seeing be”.

When you let things be, craving can’t pull you about. The mind, ceasing to get emotionally involved in the forms seen and heard, remains at ease. No agitation arises from the contact of eye and image, or ear and sound. That doesn’t mean suppressing sensation through deep concentration (jhana). You are still aware of sense impressions, but the mind stops short before liking and disliking can stir up suffering.”

- “Just Seeing- insight meditation and sense-perception” by Cynthia Thatcher, Published by Buddhist Publications Society (BPS), Kandy, Sri Lanka (2008)

The Lesson

Our senses are portals into ‘seeing’ this reality. On seeing “Just See”, without clouding what is seen or heard with thoughts born of conditionings since birth, to ‘see’ this reality. On “Just Seeing” you also begin to see the arising of a self, I or ego, along with these sense impressions, as the mind begins to form attachments to them; in the interpretation of the ‘raw sense data’ of it. Empty of thoughts – conditionings, concepts or an ‘I’ – there is neither good nor bad, just pure experience. It is the mind that clouds it. We create either a darkness born of ignorance, or a light born of wisdom, dependent on our ‘seeing’. Be ‘mindful’ of your thoughts and interpretations, ‘see’ wisely, see concepts and conditionings for what they are – a patterning since birth; dispel those dark clouds that obstruct ‘pure’ seeing – and begin to “Just See”. The peace you seek is nearer in abundance, than you could ‘see’, when the mind quietens to “Just See”!

What inspires me is the feeling or emotion we are able to capture and convey either through words, an image, or both. The ‘pictures’ we evoke more than the seen. They would better communicate who, what, or where I am now. It is through them that we are ultimately going to “see’ each other. It is through them that we may connect. I look forward to the connection.
