The Princess of Wales (London, UK) was the appointed venue for the 4th UK RedBubbler’s Face2Face meeting on 20th of December 2010. Esteemed RB members Kriss, Mark, Ross, Jo, Yvonne and I, all made it to the meet from far-flung places as Colchester, Portsmouth and Milton Keynes.

The original plan was to get together and go shooting around the area and then have a mini-competition for the best picture of the day, while we drink at the pub setting the world to rights. Unfortunately, the weather had different ideas… Heavy snow ground transport to a halt, lorries hit bridges stopping trains, etc. which meant that only few of us trickled in to the meeting, late, and nobody was particularly keen to go back out exploring, as the evening was setting in.

Nevertheless, around 7pm just before braving the 3-hour journey back home, I still managed to get just outside the pub and (with the kind offer of Mark’s tripod…) shoot some pictures of the River Lea. You can see the pub tables on the right, and a rather large canal boat on the left.

My grandfather was a serious amateur photographer in the ’20s and ’30s, leaving me a legacy of stereoscopic pictures and equipment. The bug passed through the genes to my father and to me. I started taking pictures seriously when I was 11 and I spent most of my teenage years in and out of the darkroom. University, work and kids put photography on pause but my first digital camera in 2006 re-kindled my interest. RB has given me a vehicle for sharing my work and for learning so much.

Lovely vanishing point and exposure! Made me peer closely and myopically to see all the details. Do tell: did you achieve the starburst with f/10, or does Lightroom have a new starburst effect plugin? Lovely shot. Kudos from this snow lover.

  • Thanks for the favouring Jan :-) No effect, this is more or less as-is apart from some straightening. The starburst is pure Sigma!

I assumed the starburst was pure George ;)

Still fighting that RB use of “favouriting”, George?

  • Until the day you tell me it’s proper English ;-)
