Artist's Description

Gayhurst Estate has been established as early as the 13th century in Buckinghamshire, UK reaching as much as 4,000acres. The late-Elizabethan country house has early sixteenth century origins, and was expanded in 1597 by William Moulsoe and completed by his son, Sir Everard Digby, one of the conspirators involved in the Gunpowder Plot.
The house is a Grade 1 listed building, and was derelict by the 1970’s when a developer converted the house and mews into individual houses and flats. It is a cluster of individual private residences today.

The Stoke Goldington website on Gayhurst also has a lot of details about the incredible history of this Hamlet:

  1. Bronze Age
  2. Occupation by the Romans.
  3. Home to a kinsman of King Harold.
  4. Tenanted by William the Conqueror’s treacherous half brother, Bishop Odo of Bayeux.
  5. Given to Sir Francis Drake by Good Queen Bess.
  6. Home of Sir Everard Digby, Gunpowder Plotter.
  7. Home of Lord Carrington.
  8. Residence of Sir Walter Carlile.
  9. Owned by Lord Hesketh.
  10. A satellite of The Bletchley Park code-breakers.
  11. Owned by The Bank of Switzerland.
  12. Converted into a boys boarding college.
  13. And finally – Developed into a series of private dwellings.

It is still a beautiful location today, by any account. I discovered it when I went for a short drive from home looking for a suitable location to try my converted IR camera. This is a view of the Water Garden (a lake effectively) on the estate. I have a feeling I’ll be going back…
