Winter abandonment by George Parapadakis (monocotylidono)

Difficult to believe that this is right in the middle of town centre, in Milton Keynes, UK, but it is! Fog has an incredible capacity to transform…

My grandfather was a serious amateur photographer in the ’20s and ’30s, leaving me a legacy of stereoscopic pictures and equipment. The bug passed through the genes to my father and to me. I started taking pictures seriously when I was 11 and I spent most of my teenage years in and out of the darkroom. University, work and kids put photography on pause but my first digital camera in 2006 re-kindled my interest. RB has given me a vehicle for sharing my work and for learning so much.

Winter, where, i don’t see snow! LOL

I like the dark and gloomy feel of this one, great shot George!!

  • Ah, yes… snow here is not synonymous with winter… :-) Thanks Nathalie

Ooh – this just looks so wretched! In a nice way :-)
You captured the emotion perfectly – even without the title I would have said something to that effect – Cold and lonely.

  • Thanks Vikram, difficult to believe that this was right in the middle of town centre!

Ooo – very moody atmospheric shot. I love the gritty grainyness of it. Really adds to it. This really reminds me of some books I was reading recently (The Night Watch Triology by Sergei Lukyanenko). This would fit perfectly!

  • Thanks Victoria, there is definitely something very “other” about it… :-)

You don’t know winter unless you spend one under 10 feet of snow like we did here in Montreal last year!! i can LOL about it now, but no so funny at the time. ;-))

  • LOL I know, if we manage one foot here, it’s an event. But I’m having similar conversations with my mum and what she describes as “winter” in Athens… :-)

I like the effect of the street lights, been looking for this effect for a while. Was there a fog that night?

  • I’m sorry… yes, it was all natural :-) Not sure how you can do this in PP.

Wow, George… Did you look for this scene, or was it a random find? It’s fantastic! I could see an old ’30’s Gangsta car coming at ya with headlights in this scene. Awesome!

  • Thanks Kory. A bit of both really. I found myself in a lot of fog by accident, and then looked for the right shot (well, a number of them actually, but I like this one best). And believe me, if I had a choice to avoid the damn 4×4, I would have! At least it was parked conveniently badly :-)

Love the perspective and the graininess. . . Almost like pointillism. Beautiful.

  • Yes, it has that kind of grainy effect, indeed. Many thanks :-)
