Imperfect balance

Another step in my attempts to understand lighting… I wanted to show off the flowing lines of this celery, covering a complete tonal range.

Although I did manage to bring out the texture, I still find the flash (even if diffused) too harsh for this kind of setup so I think my next attempt would be to make a softbox of some kind, to provide the same level of contrast, but with a more evenly diffused lighting. To be continued… 8-)

Your experiments are inspirational George! I feel I’ve been away from table-top for too long now!
Diffusion: can you bounce the flash off a large white card/thermocole piece. Just point the flash in the opposite direction and close to the board and bounce – It’ll spread the light more. Or This << I use that a lot.

  • monocotylidono replied 22 days ago

Thanks Vikram, I’ll try these out. I really need to get more serious about studio lighting… For this one, I used a semi-translucent sheet about 20cm in front of the flash. It made a big difference from straight flash, but not enough… back to the drawing board! :-)

    Nice work George.
It will be interesting watching the progress.

  • monocotylidono replied 22 days ago

Thanks Richard, once I’ve figured it out I’ll post up some of the ideas. Unfortunately, vegetables don’t lend themselves to repeat sessions, weeks apart… ;-)

This is cool George! You did manage to show great tonal range while still keeping fantastic detail! Lighting can be such a pain sometimes so I have great respect for you and this :)

  • monocotylidono replied 16 days ago

Thanks Shelly, I see so many things wrong with the lighting here, but I’m definitely crawling up the learning curve! Many thanks for favoring it! :-)

I thought it was a window curtain from the thumbnail!! Lovely work, George! Congrats on your feature in “Abstracts from Nature” :)

  • monocotylidono replied 10 days ago

Many thanks Mieke, a few people suggested that and I guess as a thumbnail it does look a bit like a curtain. :-)
