Peppers - Study

Inspired by Edward Weston’s famous Pepper series, I’m experimenting with B&W conversions that have high contrast, but still manage to maintain a full tonal range. My lack of experience with studio lighting is still a major drawback (not having a studio, or studio lighting, might be a contributing factor here…), but in this case I used diffused natural daylight as the light source… Arguably, it’s not the world’s most inspired composition, but hey! one step at a time… :-)

Beautiful shot George, i like the contrast.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have one of these?

  • monocotylidono replied

Thanks Nathalie, any studio will do! Although to be honest, I’d like something a bit bigger than that :-)

3 more performances, I’m FULL of a massive cold that I’ve tried to hold off for two weeks .. finally hit last night. Final night on Saturday

Ouch! that’s not good. Hang in there!... you’ll probably collapse after the adrenaline goes away… We’ll chat next week.

Well – you’ve got the full range of tones and a great pic (when framed especially). And while this might look like a simple shot – it really isn’t. So well done!!!

  • monocotylidono replied

I’m glad you like it! Thanks for all your suggestions… After various attempts to try and sort out the whites, I gave up and went back to the original version. I just need to shoot it differently next time…

PS: thanks for introducing me to Edward Weston’s work!!

  • monocotylidono replied

It’s a pleasure! He makes it look so simple doesn’t he? It’s only when you try and replicate it that you understand how much work “simple” involves… :-)

Hmm – I think this is pretty good. I think the trick is all in the lighting and the subject. Your link shows that Weston used a pepper with a very interesting shape. That irregularity has helped capture contrasts and accentuated the form.

Are they by any chance Norfolk peppers? If so you should put them in Eastern England! LOL!

  • monocotylidono replied 2 days ago

You went snooping! Thank you :-) They are ASDA’s best – who knows? I agree with you about Weston. I think he had a better subject to work with. He also knew a think or two about lighting, which I don’t (yet! he he)
