George Parapadakis (monocotylidono)

I grew up with a heritage of photography. My grandfather (whom I never met) was a serious amateur photographer and was teaching cinematography in the ‘20s and ’30s, leaving me a legacy of stereoscopic pictures and equipment, amongst other things. The bug passed through the genes to my father and to me. That’s probably also why I have a passion for collecting antique and older photographic equipment (particularly manual focus Minoltas)

I started taking pictures seriously when I was 11. B&W film and paper was relatively cheap if you could buy it in bulk, and I spent most of my teenage years in and out of the darkroom, learning the techniques and making most of my own developing chemicals from scratch. Artistically, I can’t say that there was much to talk about (although I have reworked some pieces recently and they are up in RB) but I certainly learned a lot on the techniques and the theory.

University, work and kids put photography on pause, and it took my first digital camera in 2006 to re-kindle my interest. Now in my late-40s, the kids are growing up and photography is permanently back in my life.

If a have a style, it’s perpetually experimental. My aim is to explore the boundaries of digital photography (and my own) and learn as much as I can in the process. I still don’t have as much time available as I would like to, but at least RB has given me a vehicle for sharing my work and for learning so much more by the work of others.
