Isle of Skye: suggested locations?

Good day. I’m heading to the Isle of Skye next week, only previously been there for a single day and that was long before I started photography. It’s a much visited place for photographers, so just wondering if anyone here who has visited the island has any location recommendations?

There’s the obvious places that everyone shoots like Elgol, Neist Point and that hill with the pointy rocks (name temporarily escapes me!) – so places other than that. Especially any hidden gems you might be willing to share…

Cheers, Donald

must see Tallisker bay for wonderful changing sand then the old man of storr one hour’s uphill climb but worth ever minute of it, then there is Elgol ever beautiful photographed a million times but just to stand there is a pleasure
then I’ll look forward to seeing your wonderful black and white images (no pressure then ?)

  • Cheers Marshall. Funnily enough I asked the same thing on Twitter and Talisker Bay was recommended there too, does look a good spot so yes I’ll give that a visit. Afraid I’m not doing Storr (that was the name I was trying to remember), too much of climb for me, I’ll be sticking to the more accessible places. Maybe I’ll try finding somewhere interesting to shoot Storr from a distance below, might get a different take on that location anyway. Will definitely visit Elgol, you’re right everyone goes there but I suppose there must be a reason!

How’s Glenn and the rest of your photographer lot getting along? Still getting out shooting? Like myself there doesn’t seem to be many shots uploaded by them for a while.

Pointy rocks hill is the Old Man of Storr and a must. Lovely waterfall into the sea just along from The Old Man. Otherwise just travel along either the NW coast or the SW coast. The Black Cullins are worth a visit if you are feeling adventurous. Particularly Snur Nan guillian but take care. There is a single croft underneath the mountain along from Talisker but anywhere from Carbost along to Talisker and then to Elgol. And you have a good chance of seeing the eagles as well.

  • Thanks that’s some useful pointers, I’m currently scanning maps for locations so I’ll have a look at these places. Cheers for the advice.
