The Mighty Strata

Donald Cameron

The Mighty Strata

let us pray for the good men now raging war
against vicious tremendous old sea
under moonlit mile sparkle dust decoration

and let us pray for the tattered old hands
wrinkled and shrivelled by time and by tears
weeping gently at the daily swell

and let us pray that the mighty strata
safely points its layered mass west into
bitter chills and tower block waves

and let us pray the callous sea claims not a life
unforeseen, unexpected, unheard
in the unkempt space beyond visible horizon

and let us pray their return is as swift as their exit
bringing catch to make pockets fall heavy
and crowds of well-wishers to line harbour walls

and let us pray that the efforts of trawlermen
are rightly commended on plate and on deck
and on lips served by the call of the sea

After it was pointed out that this looked like the front of a ship, I wrote an alternate poem, and the original will fit with another image to follow.

Wonderful contrasts again, Donald. Those layers in the cliffs are just excellent – great for a B&W. Sublimely done.

  • Donald Cameron replied

Yes I was really taken with the rock formations here, I’ve yet to see this type of stacked layered rock in my time shooting in Scotland, and they were virtually black and white in reality as well.

In a word- superb. (I’ve just come from a gallery looking at large seascape drawings by local artist Matthew Draper ( selling for £6000 ! ) this is in exactly the same league.)

  • Donald Cameron replied

£6000! Now that’s the market to be in, though paintings do seem to be placed on a higher level by the majority. The owner of a gallery I have work in said that someone came in to buy a large framed artwork they really loved, then realised it was a photograph rather than a painting, and said they didn’t want it any more!

this so good Donald from the inky black sky to the soft waves and as Kevin says the layers of strata stand out so well

  • Donald Cameron replied

I do like the layered rock but couldn’t think what it was called, now I know it to be stratified / strata which will come in handy for my next shot, so thanks :)

The stratified layers of rock is a perfect perspective to show the movement of the sea.

  • Donald Cameron replied

As I said above now I know from your comments that this is known as stratified, so cheers!
