Falkirk Canal Wheel
Long exposure capturing the rotation of the Falkirk Wheel in Scotland – the world’s first revolving canal boat lift. It takes approximately 4 minutes to fully rotate and lifts boats up to the next level of the canal. An amazing piece of architechtural design and engineering, apparently it only takes the equivalent power of boiling a kettle to power each rotation.

Hi Donald. Nice lengthy exposure has created a very interesting image. I’ve never seen a canal wheel, so I’m curious….what does it do ? Regards, Steve
Donald Cameron replied
Thanks Steve. Basically a boat enters the wheel under the arch at the bottom, onto a water-filled platform. The wheel then rotates lifting the boat up to the top, and it can then continue onto the upper part of the canal. It’s the first of its kind I believe, and only uses the equivalent power of boiling a kettle to fully rotate.

Thank you again! I spent hours here shooting it over and over, it only goes around once every half an hour so a lot of waiting around to try different exposure times. A place I definitely plan to go back to.

I have seen many images of the Falkirk Wheel and wondered when I’d see one of it in motion, well done and wonderful effect.
Donald Cameron replied
You’re right though, you don’t often see pics of it in motion, but to me seemed an obvious thing to try. It may be because it takes quite a bit of trial and error with the long exposures, you need the right setup and lighting conditions. Glad you liked the result.
