Old Michigan City Lighthouse

Monnie Ryan

MINERAL RIDGE, United States

Artist's Description

The Old Michigan City Lighthouse was built in 1837 and overlooks Lake Michigan. The original three-story building, which at one time contained duplex apartments, had its lantern moved to the new Michigan City Pierhead Light in 1904, and in 1940, the lighthouse building was closed. After standing vacant for nearly 25 years, it was leased to the Michigan City Historical Society for restoration and establishing a museum, which opened in 1973. The lighthouse and museum are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
