When we learned a couple of days ago that workers had planted pansies in Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek Park, Youngstown, Ohio, we got there as fast as we could to see for ourselves (happy that spring has arrived). This patch leads to a view of the Victorian Gazebo – patches on either side of the pansies have been stocked with flowers that will bloom soon. Mill Creek Park is one of the largest municipally owned parks in the USA.

I’m a semi-retired newspaper editor/writer who loves photography, especially flower macros, lighthouses, old mills and covered bridges.

WOW, are you ahead of us! There is not a molecule of green yet here! Brown, brown, brown. In all honesty, I kinda miss the snow; at least it was pretty! LOL! Soon … I hope. This is really pretty! (I may have to re-learn the camera. NO urge at all to take any photos lately here in Desolation Flats!) :-o

  • I hear you, Nadya! Even this one isn’t terribly impressive, except it’s the first real color I’ve seen so far. But there should be tulips and daffodils over the next 2 or 3 weeks (I hope, I hope).

Thanks for sharing this lovely place with us, Monnie! In a few weeks, those pansies will be glorious! The few I purchased to give us a bit of winter color, were almost immediately eaten by a hungry rabbit, who also seems to survive the winters by eating all our violet leaves. I’m glad, however, that we can help it live through the cold and wet of the cool months. However, when it comes to a beautiful (in the catalog pictures) blue clematis, I put my foot down ~ it hasn’t had a chance to bloom yet as the rabbit bit off its stem last year. This year I have it circled with chicken wire and it’s made it to a dozen inches high so far.

  • Oh no! I don’t much care for pansies, but I’m so desperate for color I was planning to get a couple of flats this weekend to plant around a few bushes next to the house. I haven’t seen any rabbits around here, but they do get around when they find a good meal. Cross your fingers!! (And wonder if squirrels like them too…)

So nice to see! Hope your pollen season isn’t as bad as ours was the past several weeks! Allergies galore and EVERYTHING on the lanai was green with pollen! I’d love to see this same scene when all the flowers are in full bloom.

  • Not so much pollen around that can be seen, but allergies definitely have been bothersome. But the trees are just beginning to show buds, so it will get worse. No doubt we’ll be back to the park soon!
