Pemberton Coal Camp Church by

The Beckley Exhibition Mine in Raleigh County, West Virginia, once was an operating mine that produced tons of bituminous coal. Today, it’s open for tours, as are a number of reconstructed buildings representing those that miners here used back in the day such as the Pemberton Coal Camp Church that was built in 1921. The interior is simple, reminiscent of small country churches in other parts of the country. An old pump organ still stands near the front of the sanctuary at the right.

I’m a semi-retired newspaper editor/writer who loves photography, especially flower macros, lighthouses, old mills and covered bridges.

A bit rustic, but it served the same purpose as a large cathedral. Nice capture, Sis!

  • That it is, although growing up on a farm I’ve been in several that were way more bare-bones than this one! Thanks, Sis!
