Gorge-ous by Monnie Ryan

West Virginia’s New River Gorge Bridge is the fourth-longest steel single-span arch bridge. The New River is popular for whitewater rafting; but on the third Saturday of October each year, extreme sports enthusiasts show up to participate in Bridge Day, when rappelling, ascending, and BASE jumping off the bridge is permitted. The bridge is within the National Park Service’s New River Gorge National River area.

I’m a semi-retired newspaper editor/writer who loves photography, especially flower macros, lighthouses, old mills and covered bridges.

Great, head-on shot of this familiar sight, Monnie! We’ve taken the New River Train twice, & one year we happened to hit the jump-off-the-bridge weekend. What a sight that was!! It is SO beautiful there, not to say Gorge-ous………..

  • Thanks, Sheila!! I’d love to do the catwalk under the bridge sometime – we’ve never been able to stay long enough to do that, but it would be quite an experience!
