Being different
I used the common colour pencils to depict having the courage to be different and break out. I used a very short depth of field on this shot to focus on the red pencil and bring a 3-D effect to the shot.
I hold this shot very close to heart- the only shot I submitted to a competition and sailed through to the finals :). The theme was…’breakout’, of course!

Very clever concept, thanks for taking the time to explain the ideas behind the shot, it really put it into context.
momleeb

Kara Rountree
This is outstanding. The detail and contrast are fabulous! I totally get your piece and applaud it. What’s great is that it would be wonderful for a kid’s room. A helpful reminder of what you want for your children. That they stand out from the crowd, be unique – have their own personal sense of self.
Excellent piece!
momleeb
Thanks Sharon and Kara for your kind words. Kara: I couldn’t agree more. It often takes a lot of courage to stand out and be different, doesn’t it?

It reminds me quote given by Swami Vivekanand: “People Laugh because i am different, but i laugh because they r all the same” this is called attitude. Nice work.

haha. in a way it reminds me of all those black and white shots where the red is the only color. Just in that you chose red to stand out, but the rest is still in color. I really like it. great dof, and perspective on it.
Dutton
This is great. I feel like I can reach out and feel the tip of that red pencil. I love your choice for depth of field. All the back ends of the other colored pencils are like eyes looking on at the lucky red one.
Ellen
