memorial memories

with uniforms pressed, and boots mirror-black
we’d show up and try to give back
some of the love given for us
with the utmost pride and never a fuss
we placed flags by the headstones
of all the soldiers who’s bones
were there cause they gave
themselves to the grave
to stop evil’s power
from ruling the hour
each year i reflect
with massive respect
on what life would be
had they not died for me

Artist's Description

i grew up heavily involved in the “sons of the veterans of foreign wars” every memorial weekend we’d go to different cemeteries and place flags on the graves of those who served, followed by marching in parades and a huge ceremony on the green in milford ct.. i still shed tears thinking about what that meant to me.
